1. How many volunteers are you expecting for the Hong Kong Equestrian Events?
     
 

Answer: We plan to recruit around 1,800 volunteers. This figure is based on the functional and operational needs and the experience of previous Olympic Games.

2. Will the volunteers selected be given the opportunity to go to Beijing for the Olympic Games and / or Paralympic Games?
     
 

Answer:We are recruiting volunteers for the Equestrian Events of the Olympics and Paralympics held in Hong Kong. Recruitment of volunteers working in Beijing is a different exercise.

3. How will the volunteers be selected?
     
 

Answer:Our selection process will be based on a number of factors including educational background, language proficiency, special knowledge and skills, experience in volunteering work, and personality traits.

4. Will persons with equestrian knowledge be given priority?
     
 

Answer:All applicants will be considered under the prescribed criteria. Persons with equestrian knowledge will be given priority for roles related to competition.

5. What sort of training will be given?
     
 

Answer:The training will include General modules, Professional modules (relevant to the duties to be assigned to the volunteers), Venue modules and Duties modules.

6. Will volunteers be paid?
     
 

Answer : Volunteers will not be paid, but they will be provided with meals and transportation during their service period.

7. Will you encourage employers to offer paid leave to successful applicants?
     
 

Answer :It is up to individual employers to decide. We encourage employers to treat this as an important community service.

8. What nationalities are preferred, apart from local Chinese?
     
 

Answer :We welcome people of all nationalities provided that they have the right to enter and stay in Hong Kong during the training and service period.

9. Are language skills are a prerequisite?
     
 

Answer :There is no prerequisite for language proficiency. Persons with multi-lingual or dialect skills are of course more than welcome.

10. We know that Beijing has already received over 220,000 volunteer applications for its Games. Will the "surplus" applicants be transferred to Hong Kong?
     
 

Answer : The volunteer programme launched in Beijing is a separate programme. Applicants under the Beijing programme will not be channelled to Hong Kong.

11. Will the duties of the volunteers be those of a "chaperon"?
     
 

Answer :Different volunteers will be responsible for different tasks. The duties of some of the volunteers will be similar to those of a chaperon while those of others will be quite different.

12. For those who are not selected for the Equestrian Events, what opportunities, if any, will they be given in the East Asian Games (EAG) or any other events in future?
     
 

Answer :For privacy reasons, we will not pass the personal data of applicants to any parties including EAG.

13. How long is the training period and when?
     
  Answer :The duration of training will depend on the nature of duties and the background of the candidates. In general, successful candidates will undergo the following training :
  • 30 hours of weekday evenings and weekend afternoons face-to-face training
  • Field-work training in various venues

14. How long is the service period and when?
     
 

Answer :Depending on the duties assigned, volunteers will serve for different durations. The basic service periods are as follows:

(a) Olympic Games – July 26 2008 to August 27 2008
(b) Paralympics Events – August 27 2008 to September 14 2008

15. Can those living outside Hong Kong apply? How are they to get trained?
     
 

Answer : We welcome all individuals to apply provided they can confirm that they will be in Hong Kong during the training periods and the time of service.

16. When will the announcement be made on the third batch of successful applicants?
     
 

Answer :We plan to announce the result by the end of April 2008 for batch 3.

17. I am physically disabled but am willing to serve in the Paralympics, can I apply?
     
 

Answer : We welcome all applicants regardless of disability.

18. I speak only Putonghua and no other languages, can I apply?
     
 

Answer :There is no language prerequisite for application.

19. Will there by any "penalty" if I am selected, trained but eventually cannot serve in the 2008 Games?
     
 

Answer :We expect candidates to fulfil their obligation of service after the training although we do not impose penalty on those who have justifiable reasons for not being able to serve afterwards.
