Introduction

Eventing competition encompasses three tests - Dressage, Cross-Country and Jumping. There are individual and team competitions. Each competitor rides the same horse on separate and consecutive days.

Rules

The first test is Dressage, to test the harmonious development of the horse's physique and ability. The score is converted into penalty points using a special formula. The second test is Cross-Country without steeplechase, where the horse is required to complete a set course of appr. 5.7km within an optimal time, clearing a variety of natural obstacles such as ditches, water, stone walls, benches as well as fallen trees. The third test is Jumping, which takes place on the third day, with an objective to test if the horses have retained their energy and obedience to jump a course of 10 to 13 obstacles.

For more details, please refer to competition format and rules. The French version is available here.

Judging

The winner of an Eventing competition is the competitor with the least penalties over the three tests. The winning team is the one with the lowest total penalty points, after adding together the final scores of the top 3 competitors in the team.

75 athletes were initially expected to compete in Eventing in 2008.
70 athletes from 24 nations are officially entered after the 1st horse inspection.
