Tips

This section will tell you bits and pieces about Hong Kong and what is going on with media arrangements about covering the Equestrian Events of the year. So send us your queries and comments and we will do our best to give you a speedy response.

Power Supply

The standard electrical voltage in Hong Kong is 220 volts alternating current, 50Hz, so an adapter is needed for 100-volt appliances and electrical equipment. The most common plug type is a three-point rectangular plug (flat pins), known as British Standard BS 1363.

Hotel Accommodation

The Media Hotel has 300 rooms reserved for accredited media. Those who have not yet made reservations for a hotel should do so quickly as room availability is getting scarce.

You can also search for hotels on the Internet for good rates, as well as our website’s Accommodation page.

Airport arrival

Assistance at the airport includes OIAC activation, guidance to Immigration and Customs clearance, and transport to the city. You are advised to wear your OIAC upon arrival so we can recognize and assist you.

Please approach our Hospitality Counter inside the airport terminal for assistance. It is located at the central concourse of the airport before the immigration booths.

Please also activate your OIAC at our Accreditation Counter located at the South Immigration Hall. Our Airport Assistants will provide support to you as required.

You can enjoy free shuttle service [TM shuttle] between the airport and the Media Hotel only upon activation of your OIAC. Media with own accommodation arrangements will have to make their own way to their lodgings by public transport such as the Airport Express, bus or taxi.

Please advise us of your flight details in advance.

Rate Card

Accredited media who have not yet booked Rate Card items/service may still do so before and during Games-time. Acceptance of an order is subject to inventory availability and/or technical feasibility.

The Rate Card Desk is located in Room 1.1.012, Level 1 of the Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Venue (Sha Tin) during the Games. Only cash (Hong Kong currency) and Visa credit card are accepted.

Internet services

Bookings for ADSL Internet connections are part of Rate Card service. It should be made through BOCOG as soon as possible to ensure cabling is in place and for you to have a reserved table.

Limited Wi-Fi connections are available at a cost. Details will be announced later.

SMS communication

When checking into the Sha Tin Venue Media Centre for the first time, please register your mobile phone number (local numbers only) at the Help Desk. All announcements relating to press conferences and important notices will be sent by Short Message Service (SMS). So regardless of where you are at the venue – in the Field of Play, tribunes or workrooms – you will instantly know what is going on. The information will be posted on notice boards, and there will be no disruptive PA system within the work areas.

Media Hotel Shuttle Buses

Accredited media have a choice of clearing the security checks at the venue or at the Media Hotel. "Clean" (pre-screened) bus service from the Media Hotel to the respective competition venue will start 3 hours before competition, operating at 15-minute intervals (or when the bus is full) and run until 1 hour after competition begins.

Please wear your OIAC so our assistants can recognize you and provide assistance. Media planning to take the “clean” shuttle should assemble in the hotel’s 1st floor waiting area for screening. Media buses will be labelled TM. On non-competition days, media should take transport to venue screening station for security checks and board a separate venue shuttle for the media centre.

City Transport

Sha Tin town centre is about 17km north of the Central District of Hong Kong Island and 13km from Tsim Sha Tsui at the Kowloon Peninsula. The Beas River venue is in the Sheung Shui area, which is further north of Hong Kong near the Lo Wu border with Mainland China. Click here for a general location map showing the Olympic venues in Hong Kong.

Trains

The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) operates regular commuter services on its East Rail line between Kowloon and the Mainland China boundary at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau. The ride from Tsim Sha Tsui East Station to Sha Tin Station takes about 16 minutes and 39 minutes to Sheung Shui Station.

An underground air-conditioned walkway (5 minutes’ walk) connects the Tsim Sha Tsui East Station with the Tsim Sha Tsui Station on the MTR’s Tsuen Wan subway line that connects Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula.

The East Rail has a station at Sheung Shui, the last stop before the Lo Wu boundary. The Cross-Country competition venue at Beas River is located just a few kilometres from the station.

Click here for more information on schedule and stations. Train service on the East Rail Line, Tsuen Wan Line and Kwun Tong Line will be enhanced to cope with the morning and late-night events. Please click here for details.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available. The flag-fall for an urban area taxi (red colour) is HK$16. The flag-fall for a New Territories taxi (green) is HK$13.50.

Public Buses

Most areas of Hong Kong are served by public buses connecting almost everywhere within the territory by the five franchised bus companies. Final destinations are prominently displayed in English and Chinese on the front of the bus. Fares are low, usually ranging from HK$1.20 to HK$45, and are based on distance traveled.
